在爬文的時候看到一些關於大學學費的問題, 所以想跟大家一起討論、分享一些大學獎學金的消息!

我在美國上大學, 所以只針對美國大學的獎學金來說瞜!

知道更多獎學金消息的同學再多補充吧! :)

美國的四年大學學費比較貴, 州立大學的學費又是以州內學生最為便宜, 外州學生貴一些, 國際學生又更貴。

所以, 知道一些申請獎學金的門道可以省很多錢和精力!

以亞裔學生來說的話, 最普遍的就是給Asian (Americans)的獎學金。

U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC) aims to increase Asian American representation in universities.

The Pan-Asian scholarships may be used for any type of educational institution:

* The Bruce Lee Scholarship challenges students to craft a creative essay that illustrates the adversities they have had to overcome in their own lives.

* The Jackie Chan Scholarship also engages students in essay writing; this time an expose on their particular talents and how they plan to use them for good.

* The Telamon Scholarship offers $3,500 to an applicant of Asian heritage actively involved in community service with a marked record of academic excellence.

(這個獎學金是高中的時候我的counselor 給我的, 好像每個高中只能提名一個學生, 所以學生自己可能不可以去申請)

每個Major都會有一些屬於自己的獎學金, 發給想要主修這個major的學生, 如果可以針對自己想讀的科系去查獎學金的話, 可以找到很多!

如果是高中生, 不妨多往counselor的辦公室走走, 跟counselors問一下有什麼獎學金適合你, 或者是辦公室bulletin board 上也都會有貼各種獎學金的通知/消息。

大學本身也會提供一些獎學金, 有些是全額的, 有些是每個學期會給學生幾千塊; 可是很多學校是有限定major的。(for example, 我有個同學, 她一定要主修Electric Engineering 才能拿到全額獎學金; 可是以我來說的話, 學校每個學期會給我4000usd的獎學金, 可是沒有限定我的major.)

有些獎學金是希望提供給比較需要錢的學生, 這時就會要學生填FAFSA (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/). 這個我不是很清楚留學生/非公民學生可不可以用? 要請知道的人來補充一下。

除了獎學金以外, 還有private grants and federal grants.

這些一定要填FAFSA, 只提供給低收入戶學生。可是我不是很清楚grants的詳細狀況, 所以...如果有特別關於grant 的問題再討論好了!

接下來, 除了scholarships and grants 以外, 還有loans. Loans同樣也有分private & federal, 其中有很多種。Such as Federal Perkins Loan and Stafford Federal Student Loans.

Loans 還有分給需要的學生還有不是特別需要的學生 (這是以學生父母的年收入來計算); 通常來說, 需要loans才能上大學的學生是畢業之後半年(或幾個月)才開始要還、開始算利息。

美國的大學比較貴, 所以出的獎學金有很多, 各式各樣; 有給不同major的學生, 給不同家庭的學生, 給不同種族的學生, etc.

我上大學以後就搬出家裡住在宿舍, 獎學金和生活費也是完全自己張羅, 所以對於這些申請獎學金啊, loan 啊什麼的我非常有心得。

本來, 我爸媽跟我說18歲以後要自己獨立, 我一度想要放棄上大學, 因為我自己怎麼拿得出那麼多錢? (我是州內學生, 一年兩學期的學費要接近20000usd)

可是後來在高三下學期的時候我申請了差不多12, 13個獎學金, 後來得到了八個, 有些是一次性的, 有些是大學四年每年都會固定給我一些獎學金; 這些獎學金cover了我兩年來的學費和生活費, 也讓我可以快樂的享受大學生活!

我覺得, 正式大學的生活真的真的很棒好好玩! 所以千萬不要因為錢不夠就放棄了!!
