After the Dinner

When Caecilius explained the thing, all the friends were silent. Soon they said “goodbye” and left from the house. They were advancing through the street nervously. No stars were shining. No moon was in the sky. The friends heard nothing, because the streets were deserted. The friends were proceeding quietly through the city, because they were afraid of the ghost.

Suddenly a cat howled. The friends feared very much. All the terrified friends rushed through the city, because they were in despair of their lives. They made strange shouts. Many citizens of Pompeii were worried, because they heard the shouts. Caecilius, however, didn’t hear the shouts, because he was sleeping in the bedroom.

Metella & Melissa

Metella were looking for Melissa in the house. Metella entered the kitchen, where Grumio was working. Grumio was angry.

“Why are you angry, Grumio? Why are you looking around fiercely?” asked Metella.

“Melissa prepared very good dinner yesterday,” replied Grumio. “Today I make worst dinner, because no food is here. There was much food in the kitchen yesterday. The slave-girl cooked all the food.”

Metella left from the kitchen and hurried to the dining room, where Clemens was working. Clemens was also angry.

“Melissa is a scoundrel!” shouted the slave.

“What has Melissa done?” asked Metella.

“Melissa was working in the dining room yesterday,” replied Clemens. “Today I’m working in the dining room. Look! The wax and the pens are absent. Nothing is in the right place.”

Metella, after she left from the dining room, entered the garden. Metella saw Melissa in the garden. Oh, no! The slave-girl was crying.

“Melissa, why are you crying?” asked Metella.

“I cry because Grumio and Clemens blame me,” replied the slave-girl.

“I, however, don’t blame you,” said Metella. “I praise you. Look! You arrange my hair very well. You arrange my dress very well. Perhaps Grumio and Clemens don’t praise you, but I praise you, because you look after me carefully.”
