【Question】What is the real goal that you think you studied English for?

Err...aren't you overseas? = =""(your stat.) As for sophisticated essays...I can't write them either, heck, most of my Canadian classmates probably have a hard time writing them as well.一_一狠 As for the speaking part...I mumble sometimes too when I get nervous, probably because I think that my English is getting rusty.

i was last year. i haven't change my state cuz i'm taking the high school exam this year and i'll eventually need to change again. :P

i know compare with some people my english is pretty good...but don't we all want to move to a higher level?

actually, many of Chinese students cant write Chinese essay well, either.XD

Hahaha...I have a friend who learned Korean, Japanese and Chinese for that EXACT reason (he's ABC - and yes, the reason is to pick up Chinese/Japanese/Korean chicks = =|||)

You can say you appreciate someone though not used in that sense. For example, if you appreciate a friend for being there with you all the time, you can say, "I appreciate her for being there for me."

"I appreciate you".......certainly doesn't sound right though I can't exactly explain why. If you truly want an answer as to why it's never used in that way, ask in http://www.englishforums.com/

From the way I see it,

"appreciate" means to raise the value of something,

so to appreciate what someone does for you is to exalt it, or praise it, if you will.

In the same sense, appreciating a person is to cherish him/her more.

Thankful, of course, is not the same as gratitude; rather, it is synonymous to grateful.

If you master the language you can basically go anywhere you want without much difficulty.:E

And it's a great platform for receiving information and for communicating with people outside where you live. I'm not really learning English right now since the stuff they teach at school poses no great challenge to me.一_一狠 I'd like to have more opportunities to write more though:)

Agree with the getting more information part.

Once you learn more, being exposed to the outside places, you'll notice that the information is coming out in english. If you want to read and understand them without any translation, learning english won't be an obstacle for you.(H)

You can know the world faster if you learn English well. I think I like it because not only it makes me read foreign books I like more easily but it clears my brain.

And, you can make more froeign friends if you are good at English.:D

I personally think English is just a tool for communication, so as long as I can chat with my friends fluently, it's not a big problem.

I actually abhorred English intensely when i was in elementary school, I failed the quizzes all the time and eventually started learning English because it's included in my middle school exams. It was a rough path, honestly, since I had no interest in acquiring another language. This was pretty much why I memorized no more than 1000 vocabs before studying abroad. Now I still think Taiwanese students focus excessively on grammar and vocab, two sections that are doubtlessly important but not practically useful in ordinary life here. For instance, I didn't talk to my roommate for the first month I arrived my boarding school, simply because I was afraid of my English deficiency. However, life really changed when I accepted English as part of my life; I still detest literature as well as my English assignments, but I am ecstatic for knowing the very basic of English--- at least it enables me to live with wider and deeper perspective.

As for the test part, I am probably not competent enough to purport any opinion about the college entrance tests in the United States. It was a godly impossible task for me two years ago, and now it's still hard. The point is I dont want to study English merely for taking tests, but somehow it seems unavoidable........... needing fortunes from someone... =P
